The Green Lion is an alchemical image of the green raw energy of nature, "the green fuse which drives the flower" as the poet Dylan Thomas once elegantly wrote. It is also a symbol of our our urge to perfection, that which moves us to grow, to push past pain, to struggle forward. Welcome to my very under-used blog with an emphasis on green ideas, politics, theology and perhaps other interests like crafting beer and fermented concoctions.

Loewen confirms candidacy for Council

Nathan Loewen - Candidate Photo croppped.jpgNathan Loewen is pleased to confirm his registration with the City of Abbotsford for candidacy in the upcoming electoral race for Council.  Nathan is born and raised in Abbotsford and is running in this election out of a desire to see his community take on sustainability more seriously, to have it become a greener city with a healthy and economically-viable living environment for all.

As a parent raising a young family with his wife, Nathan firmly believes in making public decisions with a long term view in mind at all times, so that future generations can one day inherit a community and world to be proud of.  This is only possibly, he contends, if we collectively make significant transitions that take into account our economy’s biophysical limitations and ecological footprint. It is especially pertinent for Abbotsford in regards to land use planning, urban sprawl and waste diversion, issues which are primarily in the control of municipal government. Nathan is also concerned about improving public transportation, smart planning for urban densification, increasing green spaces and ecological reserves, and prioritizing initiatives to resolve the crises of homelessness.

Nathan has worked as a company director, manager and estimator in a local contracting business for the past five years.  He is a Geography graduate from UFV and UBC, and is currently studying Renewable Resources at BCIT.  He has volunteered in a number of community and conservation groups in the Lower Mainland and has the personal strengths and balance to cooperate with others to work towards effective solutions.  Nathan's political philosophy has been informed in part by his engagement in faith based social justice and political activism for homeless and low-income residents in Vancouver, and is currently on the Fraser Valley Regional Committee of the Green Party of BC. His interests include hiking, ecological restoration, history, theology and craft brewing.
